Cranbrook, BC.
I’m currently working in this small town nestled between the mountains of southern BC. I am getting some serious “home-town” vibes here and nothing beats seeing a beautiful mountain range while you walk to get your morning coffee. Shout out to the Kootenay Roasting Company for delicious coffee to start my days. This coffee shop is not only local, but they also roast their own beans….yum!
The club that I’m working at has a 10 day schedule that begins on a Thursday and ends the following Sunday. This is called The Sammy and it’s conveniently placed in the downtown area (most things are within walking distance from the club). They are not open on Sundays so, you get a break before you start your 6 day work week.
What to do on that day off though? Well, I suppose it depends on what you’re into. I prefer the outdoors so, my first idea would be hiking. Now, there’s this massive community forest here with multiple trails to explore. I was able to explore the area back in October of 2021 and I had a blast. The trails were easy to walk and I ran into a few other people along the trails. It wasn’t crazy busy, or too “peopley” though. If you are into being surrounded by trees then I recommend you try this community forest.
Not much of an adventurer? Well, then maybe you’d enjoy sitting on a sandy beach front that faces the snowy peaks. I made my way out to Wasa Lake provincial park yesterday to check out the beach and I was thoroughly impressed with the views and temperature of the water (first swim of 2022 YAY). There were a few families there along the lake but, everyone was spaced out nicely and you could still hear the water/wind/birds. It has been a very long time since I’ve been to a beach that I didn’t feel crowded at so, I definitely will be visiting again.
Hate the outdoors? Good thing there’s thrift stores and pubs all within walking distance of the club. I have not visited the thrift stores yet because it is currently the long weekend and they are closed but, I’ll be updating you guys about those later this week. My favourite pub (so far) has been the Firehall Kitchen and Tap. The food was amazing, they make their own sauces from scratch (try the carrot habanero hot sauce if you like spicy stuff) , and they have plenty of options for beer on tap. I tried the sour beer that they had on tap that night and I’m now obsessed. I’ll have to go back to get the name of it so that I can hunt it down in liquor stores. I will most likely become a regular at that pub, if we’re being honest here.
Like to workout? I’ve been going to Fitness Inc. during my time here and I’m satisfied with it. It’s a 5 minute drive from the club and can be found hilltop looking over the town of Cranbrook. There’s a large weight room downstairs and a small weight room for the ladies upstairs (obviously you can use whatever weight room you’re more comfortable in). I stick to the upstairs one because it is not as busy so, I have more time with the squat rack. They also have group classes here but I sneak into the space when there’s no class and practice my handstands, or floorwork. There’s other gyms here that are a little bit closer but, I prefer the views from the treadmill at this place.
I like it here. Maybe I’m biased because I am obsessed with the mountains but, this gig is easily becoming one of the top 3 clubs that I work at. I’ll get into more details about the club itself here in a few days but, I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve experienced on my day off first.
